# How to get cited in AI search: a measurable publishing checklist

## What makes a website eligible to be cited in AI search answers?

Make the page accessible, indexable, and useful for a specific question. Google says its ordinary SEO fundamentals apply to AI features without special extra markup. Bing similarly connects crawlability, content clarity, and fresh canonical URLs with grounding eligibility. These are eligibility conditions, not a promise that a model will cite the page.

## Publish evidence that another answer can reference

State the question, answer it directly, define the important terms, and show the method behind any number. Original examples, calculations, and downloadable templates give a reader something to inspect beyond a product list. Label hypothetical scenarios visibly. Link product facts to the exact vendor documentation and record the date checked. Keep claim boundaries clear when a page is based on documentation rather than hands-on tests.

## Give each useful answer a stable path

Use descriptive internal links from relevant pages and a sitemap containing canonical URLs. Keep important answers available as rendered text. If an alternate Markdown or data representation duplicates the page, identify its canonical destination rather than letting formats compete without a relationship. Notify supporting engines of real URL changes through IndexNow. A machine-readable index can help discovery, but its existence alone is not evidence of improved ranking or citation.

## Keep a before-and-after record with honest attribution

Record the deployment date, changed URLs, search impressions, clicks, and any available AI citation reports. Bing's AI Performance report covers supported Microsoft and partner experiences, not every model. A citation is not a click. Compare similar time windows and note other releases or demand changes; an increase after publication does not by itself establish cause. If an assistant answers without web retrieval, a live page update cannot directly force that answer to change.

## Proposed pilot

1. Choose ten specific reader questions and map each to one useful canonical page.
2. Verify indexability, answer text, sources, dates, and relevant internal links.
3. Record search clicks and available citations separately over comparable reporting windows.
